The most interesting part of the trip for me was seeing how a newspaper works behind the scenes. I liked seeing how the newspaper brought in the advice column from a different source to get more readers. It was intriguing how the editors evaluated each pieces’ impact through real-time reader numbers. In addition, the conversation about whether to include a hip hop song with obscene lyrics demonstrated a great deal about their decision making process. They were very careful to avoid offending their mostly white readers, while still trying to showcase a piece of Detroit’s culture. I however thought they should have considered the argument from a black perspective more instead of only asking the one black person in the room. Overall it was a educational experience that will make me consider the editors’ decision making process next time I read a newspaper.
