Visual Storytelling: Documentary photojournalism

I took a documentary photography class my Junior year with David Turnley, a pulitzer prize winning photojournalist, which involved a project on the local hare krishna movement. As the class went along, I realized that anyone could be an expert photographer, or make an expert photo. The key to visual storytelling comes with practice, exposure and feel. I am by no means qualified to give advice about creating expert photos, I only took a class on it. However, I can recommend that taking as many photos as you can and throwing yourself into your role as a visual storyteller will determine the success of a project. Much like journalism, individual expression with your tool, be it a pencil or a camera, will come along organically as long as you embrace the role you are in and dig deeper into every story you see.
