Channel 4 and Detroit Free Press

Our trip to Detroit was very eye-opening for me this past week. I didn’t know what to expect, but the experience gave us an up close look at a day in the life in the news industry.

What really stuck out to me was our conversation with the editor of the Detroit Free Press. The content strategist had explained how they track the number of viewers per story and how to catch the attention of the audience. But then the editor made an important comment about the line between writing stories people are interested in versus staying true to their own mission. I think this idea is relevant to journalism because these two things often conflict. And while it’s important to provide the stories people want, it’s also equally important to provide stories that draw attention to important issues.

Overall, I think it was a great experience and learned a lot!
